Bolero is mainly set in 2002 but begins with a prologue set in 1945 and the strange stories of an air raid warden who is actually an expert on ancient documents and spends the blitz years plundering bombed out mansions and hiding the swag in a secret cellar under his london antique shop – he is killed in one of the last V2 rocket attacks on London and the valuable documents remain hidden
They are found during renovations in the 90’s and handed over to the British Museum for analysis by a russian intern working there who subsequently disappears along with the documents and turns up dead in the boot of car – MI 5 are aware of the importance of the docments as are the CIA – one document in particular was never signed back in the 19 century when the Tsars sold alaska to the US and the newly elected Putin wants that document – and will do anything to get it – it could change the entire artic landscape in russias favour
Simon hamilton is once again reluctantly seduced into investigating the case by the beautiful but dangerous deputy director of MI5 and quickly discovers the dangers he is in as the body bags build up and a mysterious ex KGB agent stalks the auction houses and antique shops looking for the documents and disposing of anyone who gets in his way –
From london to canada to antigua to moscow with a large cast of interesting characters – none of whom can be trusted – can simon use his own russian connections from the past to get next to putin and can he find a way of capitalising on the documents? – he will need to dance very carefully this time around
